Review Gothtronic
Kryptozoologie is the science of live forms which still to be proven to exist. Creatures living on the edge of perception and reality, crawling in the shadows of fantasy and mass hysteria…” This concept, chosen by Martin Steinebach, sounds like a beautiful and promising one. This German Martin is a busy guy, because all three projects Monoid, Conscientia Peccati and Stillstand are his creations. His latest project: Compest, can – according to Martin – best be described as a fusion between the three already mentioned projects.
“Wrack” was Compests first creation, which was released by Cyber Blast Records. After this first outburst, the Kryptozoologie sounded like an interesting study for the next release. And again, this CDR is filled with ambient, drones and industrial noises. The five nameless tracks promise a big concept. And, honestly speaking, this is done very nicely! I don’t recognize any deformations or mutilated animals, but I do hear some very pleasant music. Very moody and at the same time musically speaking very clear.
It’s a pity that not all the songs are equally well worked out. For instance, the opening drone, with it’s eleven minutes, goes on way too long and Martin doesn’t know how to keep this piece of music interesting. There’s a chance that one will stop listening because of this, but I recommend you all to once just hear it out, or maybe even skip this first song. Because beautiful music is awaiting you in the songs number two, four and five. Especially the last creation contains – in between the drones and ambient-music – some very delightful melodies.
“Kryptozoologie” is a CDR which one has to listen to several times, before the true beauty can be heard. But Martin knows how to build up his songs with a lot of musical layers, which makes the songs more complete everytime you hear them.
